Network Marketing has a New Language. Do You Speak It?

by admin on November 1, 2009

The art of attraction marketing and the actual words you use are critical.  Overused and over hyped words have  swept across the industry for the past 50 years.  Quite frankly, if your still prospecting with this language , the prospect begins to consciously and subconsciously discount (and reject) what is being said.  When network marketers use trite language it is lacking in freshness or effectiveness because of the constant use or excessive repetition.

Basically, what I am trying to say, it sounds like the same stuff they’ve heard before.  In this article I will try and point out what not to say when prospecting.  I’m also going to suggest some replacement language that will come across as more interesting and attractive.

“OPPORTUNITY” has to be the most overused word in the entire industry.  I can’t tell you how many times I have seen this word in my email inbox, facebook and twitter walls, skype chat, etc.  It is in the THOUSANDS.  If you want  at the very least to amuse maybe even excite your prospect, NEVER use the word “opportunity” again. Instead try these words: ”Proposal, venture, project, proposition, enterprise…”  It also works when you add the word “business” to these words.  (“Business venture, business enterprise, etc.”)

“MEETING” has to be one of the most uninspiring words on the list. People HATE meetings so why would you invite them to one.  Talk about raising someone’s guard. Immediately they are thinking sales pitch.  Instead, use replacement language like this: ”An informal gathering, introduce you to some people, a group get-together…”

“I’M INVOLVED WITH…” How many times have you heard this one?  It’s been used so often, frankly, I think it’s viewed as BS.  Try this: ”Something has crossed my desk, brought to my attention, crossed my path…”

“A FEW KEY PEOPLE” Again, boring and overused language that triggers negative images of MLM in the mind of the prospect.  Instead, you might say: ”Someone that can meet my requirements, one special person, a business associate…”

“FANTASTIC! AWESOME! EXCITED! CHANGED MY LIFE!” Sorry folks, but this is aggressive overselling.  You don’t have to be hyped and pushy to get your message across with results. Let your prospect decide for themselves if what you have is “fantastic”, remember, at that point it’s YOUR opinion…not theirs.  This is better language:  ”Great potential, attractive, interesting, intriguing, meaningful to me…”

“YOU WILL LOVE THIS, YOU’RE PERFECT FOR THIS” Do you want intelligent people in your business?  This type of assumption language is an insult to most.  Even if they ARE perfect for network marketing it makes prospect feel they’re being manipulated.  These words will get their attention:  ”This may be something you could fit into, this may or may not be for you, you may already have the skills for this…”

“GET RICH” I really hope you’re not still using that one.  You can actually see the blood drain from their face when you tell someone you’re involved with a business opportunity and they could get rich with it.  It sounds so phony and they can’t  wait to get rid of you.  It’s more believable to say: ”A substantial income, an attractive income stream, leverage income, get paid what you’re worth”

“KEEP AN OPEN MIND” How can a prospect, all of a sudden, open his or her mind?  I’ve never understood that one.  They immediately feel they’re about to be sucked into something that benefits you more than them.  What happens is, they usually SHUT their minds.  How about: ”Decide for yourself, see if this meets with your approval, you get to decide if you would be comfortable with this, your objective opinion would be appreciated…”

“WHAT I’D LIKE TO DO…” This one always makes me laugh.  People DON’T CARE what you would like to do.  They want to do what THEY’D like to do.  Give them some power by saying it this way: ”If it’s ok with you, with your permission, may I make a suggestion…”

“YOU’RE IN FOR A TREAT” Right now they are actually SCARED!  Making decisions in advance for your prospect is pushy and aggressive selling.  Only they will decide what a treat is.  Avoid that problem with this language: ”May I get your feedback on this; I would welcome your appraisal, If your like most people, you’ll appreciate this program…”

Let’s look at some out of date, overused, dull, repetitive language and then, a new way.

“I’m involved with this fantastic business opportunity and we are looking for a few key people who want to get rich.  You’d  be perfect for this and I know your going to love what you see.  You are in for a treat.”

Now let’s take a look at the NEW Language of Professional Network Marketing:

“I’m working on an interesting business project and looking for an associate that can meet some business requirements.  This may or may not be for you.  With your permission, would you like for me to send over some information and see if it’s a good fit for you?”
